Where do you currently live? Why do you live there?
Nowhere! Sold it all to ride around the world. (Formerly Revelstoke, B.C. then Vancouver, B.C.)
What or who inspired you to ride a motorcycle?
My dad. When I was about 8, he had a Honda Gold Wing. I never wanted to ride with him, too scary. But the day he sold it, he convinced me to go for a ride. Afterward I begged him NOT to sell it.
What bike(s) do you own?
Kawasaki Super Sherpa 250CC. BMW G650GS. BMW F800GS
Are you a part of a women’s riding group? If so, which one(s)?
Not yet but I will be when I return from travels.
Where is your favorite ride and why?
Agh! The toughest question. Love certain sections of the Backcountry Discovery Routes through Utah, Idaho, and Washington. Anything in a desert. Some lonely, spectacular roads in Patagonia. The Dempster and Dalton highways in the Yukon and Alaska. The peninsula around Cape Town to Chapman’s Peak.
Why do you ride or want to ride on 2-wheels?
Originally I just loved the thought of riding around with my hair blowing in the wind wearing a sexy black leather jacket and jeans. But then I realized how unsafe that was, boooo. So, despite all the dorky safety gear, it’s become about seeing the world from the seat of a bike: having my own transportation, experiencing ALL the element, sometimes not so great (heat, wind, cold, rotting road kill smells…). I also wanted an off-road bike to explore back roads near my former home in Revelstoke, B.C. and Vancouver, B.C. Finally, I wanted to ride with my through the southwest deserts, which we did for my 40th birthday.
Have you always been driven to explore adventurous activities?
I suppose I have. I mountain climb and backcountry ski. I’ve ridden a bicycle from Paris to Istanbul, have travelled to over 30 countries and have bungee jumped and sky-dived. I was a whitewater rafting guide for about 7 years as well. (Sorry for all of this, mom.)
What would you like to see more of when it comes to the women’s riding world?
Better clothing! No more black and pink boxy options. Nicer lines and styles. Think of the options for females in ski gear, for example. Why can’t we have nicer colours and styles? Like greens and blues and tappered waists (there are certainly some companies moving in this direction). More females on the BDR trails. More female-specific training in off-road riding. Empowering women to ride as well as men means providing the same opportunities, gear and support in the media for females to write about their experiences. I want to see more females on the covers of rider mags.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
My boyfriend. He’s always up before me and sometimes literally drags me out of bed by my feet.
If you could ride anywhere next year, where would it be and why?
That’ll be a tough call. I spent 2015-16 riding all through the Americas. 2017 I’ll be riding Africa, Europe and Russia. That means 2018 will likely be spent working, haha. But I suppose what I’d love to do is find a great place to ride near my future home, wherever that may be!
Do you personally operate or work at a women-owned/operated moto-related website, blog, or business that you’d like to tell folks about?
Oh man, where to start! Horrendous winds near the Gulf of Mexico. Back tire fishtailing in loose rocks for several miles along the Dalton Highway. Riding in a very windy snow storm in the dark for the remaining miles into Ushuaia, Argentina. Three consistent days of hard rain in Alaska.
Ceviche. I can even eat it after throwing up.
What age did you learn to ride a motorcycle?
Funniest thing that ever happened to you while on a ride?
I was riding while sitting on my down jacket stuffed into a sack because my ass hurt so much after riding 5 days in a row of over 500 km per day (damn BMW stock seats). It was strapped to my bike but when I needed to fuel up I’d remove one strap and lay the jacket on the exhaust side, (careful not to put it on the exhaust). After one stop, I forgot to reattach the strap so it was flying loosely behind me. I didn’t see it. People were passing me waving somewhat maniacally. I thought they were just being friendly. Turns out my $300 down jacket was melted onto the exhaust and smoking while I rode down the highway.
Favorite post-ride beverage?
Beer. And then some more beer.
