KJ Riegelsville PA – My boyfriend and I found a wonderful house in the middle of the woods with 15 acres and the inability to see a neighbor. We also have a small dirt track in our backyard.
SA What or who inspired you to ride a motorcycle?
KJ My boyfriend. He had such passion for it and after a few trips riding pillion, he prompted me to see if I would like riding. Needless to say I did.
SA What bike(s) do you own?
KJ 2010 BMW F800ST, 2000 Kawasaki Ninja 500, 2013 BMW F700GS
SA Are you a part of a women’s riding group? If so, which one(s)?
No, I prefer the small if not solo riding groups.
SA Where is your favorite ride and why?
KJ My favorite ride so far is the Iron Butt Associations Ultimate Coast to Coast to Coast Insanity ride. That ride starts from the “Southern most point in the continental Unites States” buoy in Key West Florida, goes all the way up to northern most drivable place in the United States, Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay AK then back to the buoy in Key West. I got to ride alone for 24 days, see many parts of the country and meet so many people who were following my trip on my Spot. I made a lot of friends along the way. I saw and rode through parts of North America that I never imaged I would, including the Yukon and Dalton Highway.
SA Why do you ride or want to ride on 2-wheels?
KJ Because it’s exhilarating, liberating, calming and therapeutic
SA Have you always been driven to explore adventurous activities?
KJ Not really. I have wanted to do exciting things but never really go into much past long drives. After I met my boyfriend, I got into a whole lot more, including gliding, motorcycles and tractoring
SA What would you like to see more of when it comes to the women’s riding world?
KJ More women featured for doing the same exact stuff that the men are doing! Gear that is protective but feminine.
SA What gets you out of bed in the morning?
KJ A cappuccino
SA If you could ride anywhere next year, where would it be and why?
KJ Arctic Circle to the Antarctic Circle for all the obvious reasons. It would be a fantastic adventure with so much to explore. I would get to experience many cultures along the way. It would be a life changer.
SA What was your worst day on a motorcycle?
KJ Just under the 1 year mark of my riding, I crashed on Skyline Drive in VA going a “little” faster than I should have on a descending decreasing radius turn. I broke 4 ribs, had internal bleeding and was 6.5 hours from home. My boyfriend rented an SUV to take me home in after I was released from the hospital. On the drive home while I was resting in the back on an air mattress, a deer ran into the middle of a 6 lane highway and we hit it. That hurt a lot too.
SA Favorite food?
KJ Cheese, literally and figuratively
SA What age did you learn to ride a motorcycle?
KJ I learned to ride at 33 after having taken a few trips as a pillion on my boyfriend’s motorcycle. He not so subtly hinted that if I were riding myself we could take longer trips. He recommended I take the MSF class and determine if I wanted to ride after that. As soon as the class ended I was shopping for THE motorcycle of my dreams. I found it in the F800ST. I learned to ride a dual sport after watching the Long Way Round. It inspired me to ride the UCCCI
SA Funniest thing that ever happened to you while on a ride?
KJ It was raining, as it always does right after we start to ride when the forecast says sunny all weekend, and we were enjoying the heavy rain in stopped traffic. A few minutes down the road we saw about 10 police officers riding on Harleys under an overpass trying to keep dry. We saw a truck pull up and saw them start to load the motorcycles onto the truck. They obviously didn’t want to ride in the rain. My boyfriend and I were having a blast splashing in the puddles .
SA Favorite post-ride beverage?
KJ Unsweetened Iced Tea, it’s so crisp and refreshing in hot and cold weather.
SA Name 3 immediate things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
KJ Learn to ride in sand, learn to wrench so when I take some serious trips I’m more self-sufficient, conquer my fear of riding in the woods.
SA Name 3 long-term things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
KJ Ride across the Sahara, learn to wrench (an ongoing event), take a track day and become comfortable at higher speed in turns.
