SA Where do you currently live? Why do you live there?
KD San Francisco, CA. After selling/donating all of my things and traveling on and off my KLR650 for a year, I was running low on funds. I happened to be in California and had some friends in the Bay Area. I went from sublet to sublet in Oakland then finally settled in San Francisco. Everything has fallen into place very nicely for me in SF so I’ve stayed!
SA What or who inspired you to ride a motorcycle?
KD I always wanted to ride a motorcycle, but one of my mothers two rules for me was “no riding motorcycles.” After a couple of rides on the back of my (at the time) boyfriend’s bike, I signed up for the MSF class and learned to ride. I kept it a secret from my folks for 6 months.
SA What bike(s) do you own?
KD I currently ride a 2006 BMW F650GS Dakar. Before that I had a 1999 KLR650, rebuilt a 1986 Honda XL650R and my first bike was a 2012 Suzuki TU250x.
SA Where is your favorite ride and why?
KD My favorite ride would have to be between Baja and the Lost Coast. Baja really connects me to the earth, waking with the sun, sleeping on the beach, challenging my riding. The Lost Coast was beyond beautiful and allowed me to over come some issues I had riding off road, it quickly rebuilt much of my diminished confidence and was thrilled to be riding on the unpaved roads in the forest.
SA Why do you ride or want to ride on 2-wheels?
KD I truly relish time alone, traveling and connecting, motorcycles provide me all of that as well as total empowerment. I love the feeling of waking up early, getting on the bike in the morning chill, riding and waking up all of my senses. The smells, the feel of the wind, subjected to all of the elements, being very vulnerable in so many ways but having total control at the same time.
SA Have you always been drive to explore adventurous activities?
KD I have always been driven to travel and learn and challenge myself. I now do all of that, but on a motorcycle.
SA What would you like to see more of when it comes to the women’s riding world?
KD This is a hard one, I feel like we are an ever present and growing group but I just want more of everything for us. I don’t have a specific desire, I just want more of everything.
SA What gets you out of bed in the morning?
KD The endless possibilities of the world. We can go anywhere and do anything and no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to do even half of it in a lifetime.
SA If you could ride anywhere next year, where would it be and why?
KD If I could ride anywhere I would love to just get on the bike and ride through Central and South America. I’ve traveled a bit throughout the Americas and would love to do it on a motorcycle. I love long trips and the flow you get into of day to day life while traveling on bikes.
SA Do you personally operate or work at a women owned/operated moto related website, blog or business that you would like to tell folks about?
KD I run a motorcycle tour company for women, MotobirdAdventures, www.motobirdadventures.com All of my traveling and trials have helped me grow, become more confident and sure of myself, it’s really empowering to be out on the road. I also understand it isn’t easy or possible for many to drop everything and go out on their own. I want to provide an opportunity for women to get out there, meet other women, have a great time and empower themselves.
SA What was your worse day on a motorcycle?
KD I feel like I have a few horror stories on a motorcycle, but I couldn’t classify them as “worse” because, while bad, I’ve over come them and learned and grew. My first day riding off road, I got a concussion, which made any riding off pavement very difficult for me, but whenever I did I felt I had overcome something and it made it that much better.
SA What is your favorite food?
KD My favorite food is probably fruit, I always love fruit.
SA What age did you learn to ride a motorcycle?
KD I learned how to ride a motorcycle at 23.
SA Favorite post ride beverage?
KD It really depends on what time of day it is and what the weather is like, also how long I’ve been riding. My favorite post beverage would either be coffee, coke (which I never really drink unless I’m riding!) or if I’m done for the day, tea.
SA Name 3 immediate things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
KD 1. I’m in the process of applying to become a Motorcycle Safety instructor.
2. I just started a motorcycle tour company for women, so I obviously would like that to be successful. 3. I always want to take more classes.
Name 3 long term things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
KD 1. Ride for an extended period of time and distance, the big trip.
2. Encourage and support others who are interested in riding.
