RH There wasn’t really any one particular person or thing that inspired me. As a kid I was fascinated by them, and I wanted a minibike so bad I could taste it (there was no such thing as a scooter back then, lol). My dad put his foot down, and told me never while I was under his roof. Being the rebellious person I am, that made me want one even more, which started a lifelong obsession.
SA What bike(s) do you own?
RH I currently own a 2002 Yamaha YZF600R, a 2008 Yamaha YZ250F and a 2013 BMW F800GS (which I just got.)
SA Are you a part of a women’s riding group? If so, which one(s)?
RH I belong to several women’s riding groups. One is a Meetup group that is here in Colorado Springs. The rest are Facebook groups, Colorado GS Girls, Women Adventure Riders, Women riding Dual Sports and ADV Gals.
SA Where is your favorite ride and why?
RH This is a tough Question. There have been so many, however, all mine have been on pavement. I’m very new to adventure riding, so I don’t really have any experience in that arena…yet 😉 As far as pavement goes, just about anywhere in the Colorado mountains, the Cherohala Skyway in Tennessee and North Carolina and pretty much any race track.
SA Why do you ride or want to ride on 2-wheels?
RH I ride because nothing else makes me feel as free as I do when I’m riding. I love my time in the seat for self reflection and for the thrill of it. This is my alone time, my “helmet” time. Because of that I will never ride with a communications setup.
SA Have you always been driven to explore adventurous activities?
RH I have for most of my life. I was always considered a daredevil when I was growing up. It’s that same spirit that got me started road racing. I have skydived a couple of times and loved it. I find that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten a lot more timid, and that’s just gotta stop! 🙂
SA What would you like to see more of when it comes to the women’s riding world?
RH I would like to see women’s riding gear that has colors other than purples, pinks and baby blues. I don’t know why manufacturers/designers seem to think that just because you are female, you must want pink and purple everything. It’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine.
SA What gets you out of bed in the morning?
RH My alarm and 2 hungry cats.
SA If you could ride anywhere next year, where would it be and why?
RH I have always wanted to ride all over New Zealand. I have never been there, but I’ve seen it through movies and tv shows that are filmed there, and it is a beautiful place. It’s definitely one of my bucket list items.
SA Favorite motorcycle book?
RH Twist of the Wrist
SA Do you personally operate or work at a women-owned/operated moto related website, blog, or business that you’d like to tell us about? If so, what is it?
RH I wish I did. If I could find the funding and the right design group, I would love to start a women’s motorcycle gear company.
SA What was your worst day on a motorcycle?
RH I was riding through the Texas Hill Country with 3 of my friends. I was leading the group and we came around a corner and the county had put down chip seal with no signs indicating loose gravel. By the time I saw it, it was too late, I hit the gravel went off the road and into a barbed wire fence. I tore my left MCL and fractured T7 and T8 vertebrae. On a positive note, my friends thanked me for warning them about the gravel via the dust cloud that I kicked up
SA Favorite food?
RH Chips and salsa, all day.
SA What age did you learn to ride a motorcycle?
RH I was a sophomore in college, sooooooo 20?
SA Funniest thing that ever happened to you while on a ride?
RH I was riding my KLR with a group of guys that I had just met that day. It was my first off road ride and we were doing a pretty easy trail, from what they were saying. We came across a rather large mud puddle that you had to ride through. I, of course, fell in the mud, with my bike resting on my left leg. One of the guys came back to help lift it off me, but stopped for a photo op first. He then apologized for taking the picture before helping since he didn’t know me at all. I was laughing so hard that I didn’t even notice.
SA Favorite post-ride beverage?
RH Water with lemon or iced tea with lemon.
SA Name 3 immediate things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
RH I want to be confident when riding off road. I have very little confidence, and fear ends up getting in my way. I would like to learn the ins and outs of fixing my BMW. I know that’s a skill I will need on the trail. This isn’t directly about riding, but I want to get my fitness to a level that will make learning to ride easier.
SA Name 3 long-term things you would like to accomplish in the world of riding.
RH Tour New Zealand, ride all the BDR’s and be a role model for new riders.
