Oatmeal a Day
This is my "go-to" delicious breakfast while I’m traveling in the backcountry. The ingredients you use can vary greatly. The sky is the limit, so have fun experimenting! I prepare my oatmeal packets ahead of time, at home in plastic zip-lock sandwich bags. Easy peasy! If you’re traveling with a partner, you can prepare two servings in each plastic sandwich bag. Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup old fashion thick cut oats Not instant
  • 1 serving dried fruit Cut into small bits. I like dates, apricots, dried cherries, or figs.
  • 1 serving nuts Almonds are my favorite
  • 1 serving shredded coconut
  • 1 serving seed Such as flax,chia, raw pumpkin seeds, or sunflower.
  • 1 pinch cinnamon
  • 1 cup water Use twice as much water as dried oats

Instructions
  1. Prepare your oatmeal packets before leaving on your trip. Line up daily serving sandwich bags and add ingredients to each.
  2. If this is new for you, you may want to write instructions on each bag with a sharpie. For example "Boil one cup water, add contents to pot, stir, let cook."
  3. Either continue to cook with camp stove on, uncovered for a few minutes minutes, or save fuel and turn the stove off and let oatmeal sit covered until done.

To add extra protein to my breakfast I add protein powder to my cooked oatmeal. I enjoy a variety of protein powders and I’m always trying new flavors and formulas such as salted caramel, vanilla, or peanut powder. Yummy!

TIP:  Re-use the plastic bags any number of ways!
